VIETNAM 2011
Author: Dr. Lan Jones (Show all albums)

We came from Ottawa - Canada, North Carolina and Tennessee - USA, London - England, Cologne - Germany, Tel Aviv - Israel, and Saigon - Vietnam to join hand providing free dental care and dental education for children and families living in deep poverty. Our team traveled to 11 remote villages in the province of Tien Giang, Long An, and Phan Thiet. One of the most endearing memory of this trip was the day we had to cross two rivers to reach a remote island, at the first river there was a ferry that can take vehicles across to the island. Then we had to drive a long way on this island to reach the other side where we had to unload all of our supplies in a large truck and 2 vans onto a small old ferry. We had to form a human chain from shore to the ferry. Once the ferry took us to the second island, 1 mile wide by 6 mile long, we walked to the school, everyone carry some supplies, the school teachers rode their scooters to the shore to help us with the rest of the supplies. It was one of the smallest community we have served, everyone is most kind, gentle, appreciative, and the children are very well behaved and adorable. At the end of the day, it was pitch black when we packed up, we took the old ferry to return to the other shore. The tide had changed and the ferry could not dock close to shore so all of us rolled up our pants, took off our shoes, waded through the water and mud (while some one joked about water snakes and leeches) formed a human chain and loaded the remain of our supplies back onto the waiting vans and truck. The memories of that evening by the Mekong River in moonlight will forever stay with us and enrich our lives. Thousands of children were served at each village, and thousands of families received household gifts and the needed knowledge to help themselves as they participated in the health education sessions our team provided every where we went.
